Istvan Laszlo' s artistic practice is a dialog with, and simultaneously a subtly choreographed relationship with art, cinema and history. His art raises questions of how we relate to visual references and about the functionality of human memorization. With each project focusing on the subversive possibilities within different forms of visual language, his work interacts with established ideas and in some cases real-life situations. By using patterns of image making, moving pictures and objects, his works manipulate and redefine notions of the "real" by inducing paradoxical layers of meaning. Through this intervention and juxtaposition of various visual forms, his works explore personal stories, memories and experiences that link up with historical or contemporary themes. The carefully orchestrated works morph through socio-political and historical landscapes expanding and challenging a certain kind of visual vocabulary. The conclusion in many cases is a trace of the working process, a reconfiguring of personal and universal view resulting in neatly sampled minimalist gestures.
